Abstract Scope Severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques are known for their microstructural refinement to produce ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials having enhanced strength. There is still much to be discovered in the evolution of their hetero-nanostructure with changes in temperature and time. In this study, two novel micro-beam synchrotron X-ray diffraction techniques are used to analyze real-time microstructural relaxation throughout a heating and cooling cycle of bulk hetero-nanostructured copper produced by high-pressure torsion (HPT). The monochromatic X-ray beams can yield changes in lattice parameters, segregation effects, phase compositions, crystallographic ordering, and other microstructure properties (micro-strain, crystalline size, texture, etc.). By contrast, a polychromatic X-ray beam can determine grain reorientation, and grain coarsening, during microstructural relaxation. These separate methods can provide complementary information that will further assist in the control and production of advanced nanostructures.
