Abstract Scope In this work a “blind spot” of the well studied equiatomic high-entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi, namely the fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior in the nanocrystalline regime of bulk material, was investigated. To obtain a truly nanocrystalline microstructure, the material was subjected to high pressure torsion (HPT) deformation. While the hardness was increased by a factor of about 3 after HPT, FCG experiments indicate crack growth rates 1 to 1.5 orders of magnitude higher (depending on the orientation) than the corse-grained counterpart. Typical for elongated microstructures, cracks propagated faster when oriented parallel to the principal shear direction, compared to perpendicular oriented cracks. In addition to FCG experiments also the fracture toughness is explored at room temperature and at liquid-nitrogen (77 K). Possible fracture mechasnisms are discussed. A further heat-treatment at 450°C for 1 h was also carried out and its effect on the fracture behavior was investigated.
