Abstract Scope A major limitation of using accumulative roll bonding (ARB) to produce dual-phase lamellar composites is that the constitutive properties of both phases must be well matched to ensure co-deformation during processing. As a result, most ARB-processed nanolaminates are ‘poor’ composites in the traditional sense, being characterized by only a slight mismatch in stiffness, strength, or ductility between the phases. An alternative approach is to perform ARB using reactive, intermetallic-forming metals and grow controlled fractions of a high-strength intermetallic at the interfaces after processing. While the processing window for producing nanolaminates from reactive metal pairs is narrow, we have developed methods for ARB processing Ti-Al composites to nanoscale layer thicknesses and use post-ARB annealing to create titanium/titanium-aluminide nanolaminates. TiAl3 formation is observed to follow a parabolic growth rate and can impart high compressive yield strengths (3 GPa), enabling the formation of nanoscale metal-intermetallic composites with exceptionally high specific stiffness and strength.
