Presentation Title Bio-Compatibility of HPT-Processed Commercially Pure Mg and a MgZnCe Alloy

Abstract Scope Mg and its alloys are being explored for bioresorbable bone implants; however, low strength limits its applications. One of the routes to enhance their strength is severe plastic deformation (SPD) that generates ultra-fine grained (UFG) microstructure; however, corrosion resistance, an important parameter in biological applications, of UFG materials may be inferior owing to higher grain boundary fraction. We investigate effects of high-pressure torsion (HPT), an SPD process, on the mechanical, corrosion and in-vitro bio-compatibility properties of commercially pure (CP) Mg and Mg-6Zn-0.2Ce alloy. While the bio-compatibility and corrosion responses of CP Mg insignificantly changed with HPT processing, two-turn HPT samples showed a significant increase in yield and ultimate tensile strengths and hardness. The Mg alloy showed a similar response; however, its corrosion resistance improved noticeably following two turns of HPT. Overall, HPT processing up to a limited number of turns may benefit the biological applications of Mg and its alloys.
