Abstract Scope |
Future aircraft turbine engines with the likely blade temperatures exceeding the limits faced by current generation of Ni-base superalloys invariably must depend on refractory alloys based on Mo or Nb with high melting temperatures. As part of ARPA-E (Ultimate Program) supported research, this presentation will highlight the design and processing of two new niobium alloys (Nb-Hf-X-Y and Nb-Ti-X) , through the electric field activated sintering. Various processing conditions were experimented to find the optimum processing and microstructure conditions to make bulk alloys. Sintering behavior, densification characteristics, microstructure and mechanical properties will be presented. The results indicate that the new alloys possess high strength and toughness while maintaining good ductility. Their mechanical properties will be highlighted against that of some historically known Nb-alloys that were developed in the past. |
