Abstract Scope |
Molybdenum (Mo) is a promising structural material for nuclear applications, susceptible to radiation and oxidation. Elucidating the radiation effect on Mo oxidation is crucial. While it is reported that radiation usually accelerates material oxidation, our study reveals an opposite scenario. A certain Ar ion radiation can result in a thinner oxide layer on Mo compared to non-radiated samples. We attribute this deceleration to enhanced kinetics of oxide formation after radiation, resulting in a uniform and near-amorphous oxide that impedes further oxidation. Electrochemical oxidation processes were conducted, followed by SEM and TEM characterization of microstructure and morphology. XPS analysis was employed to study the state of Mo oxide. These findings contribute to understanding the interplay between radiation and Mo oxidation, which is important for developing advanced materials in nuclear applications. |
