Abstract Scope |
This presentation will discuss the kinetics of densification of Nb-W base refractory alloys made by electric field activated sintering (EFAS), investigated as part of the ARPA_E-sponsored research. EFAS is an attractive method for rapid processing of high-temperature Nb alloys using elemental powders. The present study investigates the sintering behavior and the kinetics of densification of three Nb-W based alloys, which have been designed to attain a certain level of mechanical properties. Bulk alloy samples were made by sintering the blends of elemental powders at temperatures below the solidus temperatures of the compositions. The results of microstructure characterization by SEM, XRD, and X-ray elemental mapping are presented to demonstrate the quality of the resulting alloys and microstructures. Densification behavior, alloying, and mechanical properties of the alloys will be discussed. |
