Abstract Scope The influence of rare earth elements (REE) on the evolution of alumina inclusions has been investigated by automated-SEM inclusion analysis. Samples of different REE contents were prepared in an open induction furnace. In non-RE treated samples, clustered alumina inclusions were observed, while inclusions were de-clustered in RE-treated samples. 260 ppm RE was found to be optimum in steel to produce homogeneously distributed small near-spherical inclusions with reduced mean aspect ratio and mean length. Transformation route was identified by FactSage, which defined the decomposition of Al11O18Re into Al2O3 and Re2S3 in the presence of sulphur at room temperature, forming near globular composite Al2O3 inclusion coated with Re2S3, which closely agreed with experimental results. Based on FactSage-predicted temperature evolution of phases, a shrinking core kinetic model was developed. The model predicted the maximum size of the inclusion that can be decomposed within steel processing period.
