Abstract Scope Microgravity combined with a controlled environment gives the opportunity for accurate measurements without effect of gravitational forces and atmospheric interaction. During the casting of a steel grade alloyed with silicon, some casting breakouts occurred, which caused severe damage to the machine and resulted into a significant material loss. A number of possible causes were identified, amongst which the applied superheat, historically defined as the temperature of the steel melt above its liquidus temperature. For this reason, different methods to determine and measure the liquidus temperature were reviewed for this steel grade. Unfortunately a large spread (12-23°C) of estimated liquidus temperature values was found using regression equations, thermodynamic models and measurements. Therefore a ternary alloy containing the main alloying elements from the commercial grade was prepared and tested in several laboratories through ThermoProp consortium partners, in parabolic flights (microgravity) and in the ISS. Results agree very well with the thermodynamic models.
