Abstract Scope Most often titanium alloy components for aerospace are manufactured by machining of forged ingots with poor yield (buy-to-fly ratio), producing large quantities of machining waste (swarf). Recent research efforts focus on the efficient re-use/recycle of the manufacturing waste, without being downgraded, as feedstock in additive manufacturing processes. In this work we investigate the utilization of swarf as raw materials in rapid solidification micro-casting processes using arc-melting and copper mould casting. The study focuses on the effect of oxygen, oxides and other potential impurities on the structure, the integrity and the mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V produced from swarf. X-ray diffraction, optical (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are employed to study the crystal structure and micro-structure of the alloys. Micro-hardness measurements, compression and/or tensile tests are employed to assess their mechanical properties. The results are discussed in comparison to similar alloys produced from primary raw materials.
