Abstract Scope |
Glass recycling has been increasingly noticed to reduce landfill, and also it can lead to a significant reduction in carbon footprint. While clean glass is a 100% copiously recyclable material, glass shards and composites comprise 4.2% of total generated waste in the world. In 2018, just 33% of the total glass waste was recycled in the US, while more than 75% of container glass is recycled in Europe.
The Department of Energy and Conversation of NY is currently funding a collaboration with Alfred University aimed at expanding glass recycling markets throughout the state. Various projects are pursued by NYSSC involving many faculty and students to reduce waste by reusing glass, or remelting glasses, as well as up-cycling to new glass composite materials.
Here, we give a comprehensive overview of glass recycling, such as defining the 3Rs concept in glass recycling, innovative approaches, challenges, and the perspective of glass recycling. |
