Abstract Scope |
Metal Additive Manufacturing using the laser-based powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) technique has established itself as an outstanding fabrication tool when it comes to customisation and the extended degrees of design freedom using standard commercial materials. The opportunities offered by this family of processing technologies though extends beyond to the realm of functionalisation through materials’ design. Microstructural control by means of in-situ alloying has recently demonstrated excellent potential in controlling the micro-scale properties to manipulate the bulk properties of the 3D printed structures. For example, the incorporation of transition metals and/or nanoparticles in metal matrices followed by in-situ alloying has been used to either improve processability or tailor the mechanical performance (strength, tribological behaviour, etc). On the hand, using computational methods to control cracking in difficult to process materials has been another excellent example. This talk will present an overview of novel approaches to material and alloy design for these purposes. |
