Abstract Scope |
This paper is an update of recent the technological advancements in lost foam casting made by the authors and others. These include the ability to lost foam cast high and medium carbon steels including stainless grades and tools steels, net shape threads and gear teeth, thin walled ductile iron and steel down to 1.5mm, and a process to surface harden and eliminate heat treating. Finally, the industry is utilizing additive manufacturing techniques. A variety of research into additive created tooling to more rapidly and affordably blow foam patterns is ongoing. The authors are also merging additive with lost foam in the form of AMEC (additive manufacturing evaporate casting) which utilizes a 3D printed PLA form in lieu of the polystyrene foam. Examples of AMEC in steel, iron, brass, and aluminum will be reviewed. |
