Abstract Scope |
In support of qualification and certification efforts, it is important to understand the effects of lack of fusion defects on the mechanical and corrosion properties of AlSi10Mg parts fabricated by laser powder bed fusion. Inserting CAD generated defects into parts may not accurately capture the geometry or distribution of rogue parameter-generated defects. A series of 120 process parameters generating defects were fabricated and characterized using optical microscopy and X-ray computed tomography. A 60 micron voxel resolution was selected to represent resolution used for relatively large parts. Average defect dimensions and defect distributions are presented and compared to energy densities and other process parameters. Selective placement of defects within parts is successfully demonstrated. |
