| Abstract Scope |
In-envelope hybrid additive manufacturing is where additive processes are combined with other, more traditional, manufacturing processes. Often subtractive CNC machine tools become a platform that integrates blown-powder laser based directed energy deposition (DED). This integration leverages the benefits of both AM - including complex geometries, part consolidation, and mass customization – with traditional processes providing superior surface finish and dimensional accuracy. Benefits such as integrated structural health monitoring, smart tooling, conforming antennas, active thermal management, and more are possible. Here a screen-printed ceramic sensor capable of high temperature strain measurement is printed on a tab fabricated tab by an AMBIT hybrid CNC/DED system. The tab is embedded inside of a 13-8 Mo stainless steel part also fabricated using the AMBIT system. Strain data is captured during fabrication and elastic tensile tests after post processing. |
