Abstract Scope |
The appearance of vertical folds (VF) is a known surface defect in DC aluminum casting of Al – Mg alloys, which affects both productivity and quality in the scalper and downstream rolling process, respectively. In this study, a series of industrial DC casting trials has been performed in terms of grain refiner additions and oxidation inhibitors with the objective to study their effect on VF formation. The number, length and width of the VF on the surface of the produced ingots has been macroscopically recorded. In addition, the microstructure of corresponding as – cast samples has been examined by means of light optical microscopy and SEM. Based on the results, a mechanism describing the contribution of oxidation and segregation phenomena on the formation of vertical folds is presented. Finally, the efficiency of employed measures to constrain vertical folds generation has been evaluated. |
