Abstract Scope |
The thermal transfer performance in the primary cooling area of a direct chill casting plant plays a crucial role in the microstructure formation process. Understanding the influence of cooling rate on phase formation is essential for optimizing alloy design. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of heat transfer based on experimental results and its impact on phase formation during the solidification process of aluminum alloys.
Measurements were conducted on a laboratory-scale direct chill casting plant VCC3000 from Indutherm, with a focus on the primary cooling area. Therein, heat transfer coefficients were determined using eight thermocouples placed inside the graphite-mould walls. By adjusting the coolant flow rate and casting speed varying between 0.5 – 2.5 mm/sec cooling rates could be varied in a desired parameter field. Finally, the cast samples were characterized using advanced microstructural characterization methods, such as SEM, to investigate the resulting microstructure and phase composition. |
