Abstract Scope |
The removal of transition metal impurities is vital in producing high conductivity aluminium for wire and cable applications. These solute impurities are generally precipitated from the melt through the addition of aluminium-boron master alloys. In the current work two types of aluminium-boron master alloys, i.e., Al-3%B (AlB2 phase) and Al-8%B (AlB12 phase), were investigated to remove Ti and V impurities from electrolysis metal ingots. Laboratory scale experiments were carried out to study the effect of holding time, stirring, and fluxing on the electrical conductivity of the cast material. All parameters proved to have a positive effect. Melt quality assessment trials by using Porous Disc Filtration Apparatus (PoDFA) were also carried out in the aluminium wire rod cast house producing (1370 alloy wire rod). The melt quality results from cast house proved that the Al-5 % boron master alloy with AlB2 phase, produces cleaner melt in terms of total inclusion count. |
