Abstract Scope |
To realise a net-zero emission society in 2050s, there is an urgent need to develop and adopt energy efficient and sustainable technologies with minimum greenhouse gases emission in the materials and manufacture sector. In this aspect, the pulse electromagnetic field (PMF) has been identified as a promising method for controlling the microstructures of metallic alloys.
To understand the complex and highly transient microstructural evolution across multilength and multi-time scale in PMF, we have developed a multiphysics model to simulate the solidification dynamics under PMF. The model is able to simulate the magnetic pulses, pulse induced Lorentz forces, induced stress field and fluid velocity field. The simulation results have been validated by the radiography and tomography imaging data collected in real-time.
In this work, we focus on elucidating the phase growth instability, side branching, fragmentation and orientation alignment of intermetallic phases in an Al-15wt%Ni alloy under different magnetic fluxes. |
