Abstract Scope |
Applying external fields into the solidification processes to control the nucleation and growth dynamics of different types of structures in metal alloys, e.g., dendrites and intermetallic phases is a widely accepted technical route for controlling the alloy microstructures and final properties. Here, we present a number of important research cases on studying in real-time and in operando conditions how the applied ultrasound waves and magnetic pulses affect the nucleation of intermetallic phases and the subsequent growth dynamics for a number of recycled Al alloys. We have used the combined techniques of high-speed synchrotron X-ray radiography, tomography, and scattering (diffraction) to study systematically the evolution of the atomic structure of the liquid melt and subsequent phase nucleation, growth and fragmentation dynamics. By systematically analysing hundreds of TB data, new strategy for controlling and modifying the size, morphology, and distribution of the intermetallic phases during solidification processes are discussed and proposed. |
