Abstract Scope |
A three-dimensional multiphase numerical simulation model of the solidification of Fe-0.82wt%.C steel alloy under the effect of thermosolutal convection is presented. The studied system is in a rotating frame of reference, rotating with constant angular speed in a counter-clockwise direction around the x-axis of the original frame with r = 1 m radius of rotation. The flow is solved in the rotating frame of reference i.e. taking into account fictitious forces such as the Centrifugal and Coriolis forces. The results show that the Coriolis force breaks the thermosolutal convection, having an important impact on the final macro segregation pattern. The Coriolis force re- organize flow and temperature structures into aligned structures with the rotation axis. We found that thermosolutal convection was able to compete with Coriolis force on in region close to the free surface. After full solidification, the segregation retained alignment with the flow and temperature patterns, however, stronger segregation was found to be near the free surface. This study offers valuable insights applicable to diverse industrial applications using centrifugal operations. |
