Abstract Scope |
Modification of flow has been shown to have a large effect on the microstructural dendritic growth during directional solidification, causing changes to convective solute transport. In our previous reported study, we modified flow using the interaction of thermoelectric currents with static magnetic fields, employing the phenomenon known as Thermoelectric Magnetohydrodynamics (TEMHD). Our current work expands on this to look at the effect of pulsed magnetic fields and the interaction with the induced currents generated. Pulsed fields are known to influence microstructure evolution, and we hypothesise that this is also due to fluid flow. Modelling work of this process in thin Hele-Shaw quartz cells has been performed on both a micro and macro-scales, looking at both the gross flow patterns within the cells and the microstructural solidification and inter-dendritic flow. We compare our modelling work to experimental work in situ at Diamond Light Source. |
