Abstract Scope Zirconia, a biocompatible ceramic was finely dispersed within the matrix of titanium-aluminium-vanadium alloys in an attempt to improve its wear properties for bio-implant application. Direct metal laser sintering technique was used to additively manufacture the Ti6Al4V- ZrO2 composite systems. The structural and textural developments were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, electron back scattered diffraction and X-ray diffractions techniques while the microscale and nanoscale mechanical properties were evaluated using Vickers microhardness and the nanoindentation techniques. SEM images showed well dispersed zirconia within the alloy of basketweaved microstructure with well distributed and needle shaped á-phase. Results on the relationships between the micro-scale and nano-scale mechanical properties including nanoindentation hardness as well as the tensile, creep, and fatigue properties derived from the nanoindentation analysis are reported.
