Abstract Scope Due to high strength, low density and great corrosion resistance, titanium alloys have been widely used in aerospace field. However, relatively high cost, especially high manufacturing cost, has significantly limited the application of titanium products. Additive manufacturing has become a promising manufacturing technique that can potentially reduce the manufacturing cost of titanium product. In this work, we used advanced scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transition electron microscopy (TEM) and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy to systematically study the selected laser melted metastable beta Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr (wt.%, Ti-5553) alloy. The micro- and nano-scale structure in the as-printed Ti-5553 was studied using SEM and TEM. For the first time, nanoscale hexagonal omega phase and orthorhombic O’ phase were characterized in the SLMed Ti-5553. Additionally, stress induced martensitic transformation has been characterized in the SLMed Ti-5553 rather than stress induced twinning. This work is supported by the National Science Foundation, grant CMMI-2122272.
