Abstract Scope Current welding standards that are applied to additive manufacturing for Ti-6Al-4V specify acceptable colors for an as deposited heat-treated product. The present work investigates the conditions under which the surface oxide color provides an accurate indication of underlying oxygen content and/or alpha case depth – for example, if the color results from the final step in treatment or a culmination of the entire product processing. The correlation between surface color and fatigue debit is also explored. Nine specimens were heat treated at three different temperatures and three different times to see the effect heat exposure has on the color and oxygen content of the specimen. It was determined that a correlation exists between the oxygen content and the color of heat-treated Ti-6Al-4V. This will help improve standards for welding and additive manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V in the future.
