During our efforts to manipulate the crystallographic texture in austenitic stainless steels by L-PBF, neutron diffraction was proven a high throughput method to assess the preferred crystallographic orientation along the building and scanning directions. The combination of the process parameters and texture characterization is used as input in order to create a decision tree regression model that reveals trends and pathways in the process parameter optimization. By combining the texture-manipulation capabilities of L-PBF with the strong orientation-dependence of the transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) and the twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) effects, we design site-specifically tailored textured stainless steels that under bending deformation exhibits enhanced work hardening and energy dissipation capabilities compared to monolithic counterparts. The study highlights the enormous potential of L-PBF as a tool for site-specific manipulation of the microstructure and realization of smart materials with enhanced mechanical properties. |
