Abstract Scope |
The microstructures of additively manufactured (AM) materials are often unique relative to conventionally processed materials, and these differences are driven by the local thermal histories during the build process. These thermal histories depend on both the process parameters (laser power, scan speed, scan strategy, etc.) and the part geometry. Prior work has shown that the mechanical properties of thin-walled structures can vary significantly with wall thickness due to changes in the thermal boundary conditions. In this work, we investigate the nature of this size effect on the mechanical properties for AM GRCop-42. The microstructure (texture and grain morphology) and mechanical properties are characterized for different wall thicknesses, and crystal plasticity simulations are used to interpret the experimental observations and establish size-dependent structure-property relationships. |
