Abstract Scope |
Thickness dependent debits in mechanical properties of structures fabricated by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) have been well demonstrated in the literature. In this work, we examine the underlying causes for these dependencies, specifically for thin wall Inconel 718 ranging in thickness of 0.3mm to 2mm, and tested mechanically under quasi-static tensile loading conditions with as-printed morphology. Building on statistical analyses of the data, we show how the nature of thickness-dependence changes according to the metric of interest, as well as examine the influence of Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) on these relationships. Combining microstructural and fractography studies with Finite Element Analysis of 3D scans of the as-printed morphology, we demonstrate how morphology dominates behavior at smaller length scales. We also develop a thickness-dependent mathematical model that reveals that the effects of HIP are subsumed by morphological effects at lower thicknesses. |
