Abstract Scope |
Architected cellular materials are hybrid materials that consist of solid structures with air pockets. By modifying the internal micro-architecture, these materials can achieve highly tunable macroscopic properties, making them desirable for various engineering applications in automotive, aerospace, sports, and biomedical. However, traditional manufacturing processes were limited to producing either highly stochastic foams or uniform periodic structures. Between these two extremes of stochasticity, there is a large untapped design space of architecture, resulting in a gap in the knowledge base around architected materials. The advent of additive manufacturing has enabled researchers to fabricate a wider range of cellular materials with diverse internal micro-architectures. Dr Yu's research is focused on heterogeneous architected cellular materials (HCMs) with intermediate stochasticity (mesoscopic geometries inspired by natural structures), demonstrating promising potential in enhancing strength and toughness. This talk will provide an overview of Dr Yu's research program on HCMs and discuss their potential future applications. |
