Abstract Scope |
Synthesis and fabrication of multicomponent materials via additive manufacturing tend to produce nonuniform compositions and heterogeneous microstructures in different regions, particularly when blended elemental powders are used. Micro/nano-indentation testing can effectively investigate the composition-microstructure-property relationships on small scales. This talk will present several representative multicomponent materials (e.g., high entropy alloys, bulk metallic glasses, and metal matrix composites) fabricated using laser-directed energy deposition from elemental powders. Different characterization techniques and mechanical tests were employed to probe the composition, microstructure, and property on different length scales. The linkage between the micro/nanoscale mechanics and macroscale mechanical response will be briefly discussed. |
