Presentation Title Handheld Ultrasound Device for Characterization of Soft Materials

Abstract Scope Quantitative ultrasound using high frequency signals has shown promise in imaging and characterization of small-scale biological tissues and soft materials. Peak density measurements of the signal in the frequency domain in a pitch-catch mode have been linked to the density and size of inhomogeneities in the material. Because of the high frequency, this method is best applied to samples only a few millimeters thick. Consequently, the method is very sensitive to parameters such as the mechanical force applied by the ultrasound sensor and the thickness of the specimen. To consistently change and evaluate the impact of these parameters, a device is designed, 3D printed and fine-tuned for consistent and repeatable measurement of peak density of the Fast Fourier Transform of the signal passed through the material while simultaneously measuring the force applied to the sample and the sample thickness. The results are summarized and presented here.
