Presentation Title Rapid Solidification of Non-Dilute Binary Alloys: Theory and In Situ Diagnosis
Author(s) Jianrong Gao, Dandan Zhao
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Jianrong Gao
Abstract Scope There has been increasing interest in modeling of rapid solidification kinetics of small melt pools towards a precise control of microstructure formation during metal additive manufacturing technologies. Because most of additively manufactured materials are non-dilute, it is of critical importance to develop theories on rapid solidification of non-dilute alloys. In this talk, I will give a brief overview of previous theories first. Then, I will introduce a new theory that includes a non-trivial contribution of solute drag to interface undercooling. Next, I will take about validation of the new theory by measurements of dendrite growth velocity during rapid solidification of undercooled Co-Cu melts using a high-speed optical camera. Last, I will show that the new theory is in excellent agreement with literature data of dendrite growth velocity in various binary systems. The financial support from National Natural Science Foundation of China is gratefully acknowledged (grant no. 52061135106).
