Abstract Scope To understand the solidification and segregation behaviours of super austenite stainless steel under different cooling rates, in-situ experiments using high-temperature confocal laser scanning microscopy were conducted. Microscopy techniques, including scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and Electron Back Scatter Diffraction (EBSD) were used to analyze the solidification microstructure and determine the main distribution of alloying elements. Among the alloying elements, Mo segregation is the most server, and it decreased as the colling rate increased. The steel solidified via a “peritectic transformation” and the cooling rate can affect the nucleation and microstructure of δ-ferrite. More importantly, the effects of cooling rates on the precipitating morphologies of γ-phase were clarified based on the experimental results and the diffusion-controlled growth theory. This work shed light on the real-time insights for the crystallization behavior of super austenite stainless steel during the solidification process.
