Meteorites have highly complex microstructures. This is a result of extreme environments and structural modifying events that span extremely long times. The precise structure-property correlations in these materials are not very well known. In this talk, we report on in situ compression experiments on Aba Panu meteorite (L3) cylinders during x-ray microtomography (XRT). The time-resolved evolution of cracking was studied in 3D. The mechanical properties of individual constituent phases, obtained from nanoindentation, were used to complement the macroscopic stress-strain behavior and microstructural analyses. Complex phenomena related to the initial distribution of microcracks, crack growth and coalesce, followed by fracture were studied. These microstructural observations were correlated to macroscopic stress-strain behavior and will be discussed. |
