Abstract Scope |
We present applications of a novel femtosecond laser micromachining workstation for fabrication of site-specific small scale mechanical testing. The 1030 nm laser operates at energies ranging from roughly 20 to 200 μJ/pulse, repetition rates up to 550 Hz, and pulse duration of ~600 fs. The laser is coupled with a steering mirror, a 6 degree of freedom hexapod stage allowing for macroscopic travel at nanometer scale resolution, and a machine vision camera microstructural scale and mapping. We will present examples of the application of this system for batch micromachining of metallic, ceramic and/or composite specimens at specific material interfaces including twins, grain boundaries and fiber/matrix interfaces. We will include investigations of the deformation and failure response of materials using digital image correlation and a thermomechanical test stage capable of quasistatic testing of small scale specimens under compression, tension, and bending over a range from -50 to nearly 500 °C. |
