Acoustic emission (AE) measurements coupled with in-situ microcompression experiments were used to study the deformation dynamics of Ni micropillars. AE revealed that deformation is dominated by a series of correlated short events, in an analogous form to the fore and aftershocks associated with the mainshock in earthquakes. Moreover, all avalanches’ are observed to be confined within a very narrow frequency bandwidth. Unexpectedly, time-domain analysis proved that size-effects had its shades on the AE response as well as the mechanical response. It was found that smaller micropillars exhibited larger AE amplitudes and energies compared to the larger ones. Results showed a good match with the models presented earlier in literature for the AE associated with dislocations motion. Lastly, AE features of the strain bursts were analyzed in the light of earthquakes governing laws, showing a close match between both regardless of the differences in the length scales. |
