Abstract Scope |
This investigation explores the geometrical alignment of adjacent twins across a boundary using in-situ electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in pure Mg. The investigation also incorporates the collection of strain maps through multi-step in-situ deformation experiments obtained by high-resolution digital image correlation (HRDIC). The in-situ tensile tests demonstrate that the twins connected at a common grain boundary do not necessarily result from twin transfer events. Instead, the majority of twin pairs at grain boundaries form through co-nucleation of two twins in neighboring grains. A comprehensive statistical analysis is performed to examine twin transmission and co-nucleation across grain boundaries including Schmid factors, geometric alignment of twin plane normals and shear directions, activity of basal slip in neighbor grains. This analysis aids to understand and to distinguish between the processes of co-nucleation and transmission in twin-pair formation and helps to identify the influence of local stresses on twin nucleation. |
