Abstract Scope |
Mechanical behaviours of pure zirconium with and without hydrides were studied by in-situ digital image correlation (DIC) small-scale tensile tests of cold-rolled polycrystalline samples in secondary electron microscope (SEM). Deformed samples were further analysed using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Pure zirconium shows higher yield strength when load is applied along transverse direction compared to rolling direction due to strong texture. However, Young’s modulus and hardening rate change little with loading directions. Slipping and twinning contribute to deformation of pure zirconium, while pure zirconium with δ-hydrides achieves deformation only by slipping. The presence of δ-hydrides enhances strain localisation in pure zirconium in the early plastic regime through slip-hydride interactions, leading to lower yield strength. The hydride-matrix interface where much slip accumulate is likely to be the micro-crack nucleation site for fracture. Lastly, DIC and HR-EBSD results are compared to further discuss quantitative study of the local deformation state. |
