Abstract Scope The icy crust of Europa undergoes continuous bombardment by particles in the Jovian magnetosphere, resulting in changes to the structure and properties of the surface. Future missions to Europa and other icy airless moons that receive local magnetospheric radiation in the outer solar system therefore require understanding the properties of ice in its irradiated state. This talk will present progress on characterizing the structure and mechanical properties of water ice under ion irradiation, including the effect of impurity implantation and displacement damage on microstructure evolution, strength and ductility, and infrared spectroscopic signatures. We will discuss prospects for providing data critical for both remote sensing and future in situ lander missions to Europa and other icy worlds.
