Abstract Scope |
Thermal transport is crucial for reactor efficiency and safety, making it one of the most important material properties in nuclear engineering. During reactor operation, factors such as irradiation and doping significantly affect thermal transport [J. Nucl. Sci. Technol. 36 (1999), J. Nucl. Mater. 404 (2010)]. Our research focuses on microscopic origins of thermal transport in advanced nuclear fuels, particularly uranium-based materials (e.g. UO2, UN). By using inelastic neutron scattering measurements to determine phonon group velocities and lifetimes (the inverse of phonon linewidths), we gain direct insights into the microscopic mechanisms governing lattice thermal transport. This also benchmarks advanced theoretical calculations that account for strong 5f-electron correlations against neutron scattering measurements.
