Abstract Scope |
The widespread adoption of additively manufactured (AM) aluminum in the automotive market faces significant barriers related to production rates and qualification of AM components. To overcome these challenges, a new hybrid manufacturing approach is currently explored that integrates casting and AM processes. By casting certain sub-sections of components and using AM for the remaining geometry, critical stress pathways can be certified while unnecessary weight is removed. However, the implementation of this hybrid approach necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the interface properties between the cast substrate and the AM material. In this work, we studied the microstructural and compositional changes near the interface of laser hot-wired AM 5356 Al-Mg and as-cast Al-Mg-Si alloy using Atom Probe Tomography (APT). Such a localized characterization at an atomic scale along the interface provides valuable insights about the materials microstructure which will then be useful to optimize the processing parameters. |
