Abstract Scope |
Maraging steels (MS) are ultra-high-strength ferrous alloys extensively employed in structural applications, including aerospace and nuclear engineering. Over the past decade, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), an additive manufacturing (AM) technique, has emerged as an eminent processing method for MS. However, variations in atomizing routes can introduce defects and impurities in powder particles intended for LPBF, potentially compromising the structural integrity of parts. Despite inherent defects in AM-processed MS components, specific heat treatments can mitigate their impact on performance. This research explored the influence of two distinct atomized LPBF powders on the microstructure and mechanical properties of MS-300 parts and assessed the effects of post-heat treatments on the same features. The findings underscored the critical role of powder atomization processes in shaping AM part quality and highlighted how tailored heat treatments can enhance MS-300 ductility and mechanical strength through phenomena like austenite reversion and precipitation hardening. |
