Abstract Scope |
Nickel superalloys are widely used in high-temperature applications due to their exceptional performance. However, solidification-processing issues remain an obstacle to their casting and other solidification-based applications. Al-Ce alloys have shown promise as castable alternative to high-strength Al-alloys, which also exhibit poor solidification behavior. Eutectic Ni-Ce alloys which have a narrow solidification range are being investigated as a method to alleviate these issues and ultimately produce a castable alternative to traditional nickel superalloys. Prior study of near-eutectic Ni-Ce alloys showed good microstructural and mechanical properties compared to Inconel 718 to 900°C but noted a significant anomalous hardness decrease for the on-eutectic Ni-Ce alloy. Neutron diffraction is utilized to evaluate lattice strain evolution and load partitioning in context of this mechanical and microstructural behavior. An explanation for the diminished thermal stability of the on-eutectic alloy compared to the near-eutectic alloy is proposed. |
