Abstract Scope Training in computational tools for programming, modeling, and simulation in undergraduate MSE curriculum has evolved significantly over the past two decades. The results of a two-year research study indicate that first-year engineering students’ motivational factors for learning to use MATLAB are not related to their choice of major, and in interviews most students agree that engineers in all disciplines will need to develop these skills. By the time they are ready to graduate, however, student’s beliefs will have been shaped by their instructors and curriculum – and thus may vary significantly. Motivation for learning is intricately linked to success in learning, and this presentation will explore ways to address both.
