Abstract Scope |
Replacing large introductory materials lectures with a no-lecture, team based approach permits a unique opportunity to drive inclusion and build mutual trust and respect amongst students. This presentation will show how using third and fourth year materials students as Instructional Aides (IAs) can draw out introverts and tamp down extroverts in an attempt to give every team member an equal chance to talk during team activities. The first step is to use CATME.org to create teams that reflect the diversity of the classroom. We use gender, race, class year, major, and a 5 hats personality measure as inputs to ensure diverse teams. Activities are delivered with Learning Catalytics software that are a combination of conceptual and mathematical problems. Results will be shown that when combined with an un-grading, or mastery approach, these methods may lead to better learning and retention. |
