Presentation Title Utilizing Hybrid Hot-Wire Laser DED to Repair Fractured Surfaces of H-13 Tool Steel

Abstract Scope Hybrid manufacturing combines the complexities of additive manufacturing with the finish and accuracies of subtractive manufacturing in the production and repair of parts and tooling. Hot-wire laser direct energy deposition, using a machine with 5-axis capabilities, can be employed for a wide range of build shapes or repairs to damaged tool or end-parts. Effective repair will result in an extension of the life of a piece of equipment or tool. In this research, H-13 tool steel is the metal of choice. Previous research has utilized the hot-wire laser DED to build tensile specimens, which were then tested and compared to traditionally manufactured H-13 tool steel. In this research, a damaged H-13 steel specimen will be confocally repaired with wire H-13 steel and the mechanical properties of the repaired design will be determined. These properties will be compared to the original H-13 steel build to determine the effectiveness of the repair.
