Presentation Title Effect of Heating Rate on the Production of Iron Nugget from Off-grade Iron Ore Fines

Abstract Scope This investigation reports that high heating rate can convert off-grade iron ore-graphite composite pellets into iron nuggets at low temperature than reported. It demonstrates that under a high furnace heating rate (298K/min), the formation of the iron nugget was possible at 1523K, while nugget formation did not occur at a lower furnace heating rate of 278K/min. With a much higher pellet heating rate under flash, nugget formation was possible at 1473K. A theoretical estimate showed pellet heating rate under flash heating is more than ten times the furnace heating rate at 298K/min. Low-temperature iron nuggets produced under flash heating due to the faster rise of pellet temperature facilitated complete iron reduction and carburization during the initial reduction stage before entering the sluggish heat transfer regime. Factsage calculation showed that iron remained in the liquid state at these temperatures and slag in the solid state.
