Abstract Scope Industrial thermal processing of steel involves using open resistance furnaces that are regarded as a highly inefficient processing method. The development of Induction-coupled ThermoMagnetic Processing (ITMP) allows simultaneous heating using induction heating and the application of a high magnetic field, resulting in a highly efficient processing method. Early work shows an increase in phase stability in addition to anisotropic diffusion when a magnetic field is applied to the material during heat treatment. By altering phase equilibria and kinetics, the mechanical and microstructural properties of steels can be achieved in a manner previously not possible using traditional methods. This work uses in-field annealed diffusion couples to quantify carbon diffusion rates and their resultant microstructures. Computational simulations using first-principles calculations and CALPHAD will be used to identify and understand mechanistic phenomena occurring during ITMP to explain the experimental observations.
