Abstract Scope Stainless steels are widely used structural materials, yet their smelting and manufacturing processes require many convoluted steps due to their complex chemistries. Today, stainless steel is produced via alloying ferrochromium, ferronickel, other minor ferroalloys, and scrap metal to produce a crude alloy product. Refining is then generally conducted via argon oxygen decarbonization (AOD). The sustainability landscape of stainless steel is nuanced due to the balance of low and high environmental impacts from scrap recycling and virgin ferroalloy production respectively. Recently, low-carbon methods of ferroalloy production utilizing sulfur chemistry were demonstrated. Herein, we leverage this approach to develop a sulfide-based processing pathway for direct production of mixed chromium-nickel-molybdenum ferroalloys from mineral sources. We then experimentally validate thermodynamic and kinetic factors surrounding product composition and purity. This new blended ferroalloy product and sulfide-based production pathway may reduce both direct greenhouse gas emissions versus legacy pyrometallurgy and the refining burden of AOD.
