Abstract Scope The production of 46MnVNbS5 medium-carbon microalloyed steel in a steel factory has caused the problem of nozzle accumulation, which cannot achieve multi-furnace continuous casting. With the increasing requirements of steel mills on production efficiency and cost control, it is particularly important to solve the problem of tumor storage and increase the number of continuous casting furnaces. In this study, through microscopic characterization and thermodynamic calculation, we investigated that the type of tumor was CaS. The reasons for precipitation were analyzed, including direct precipitation of S and Ca saturation in steel and indirect precipitation in calcium aluminate. Finally, we provided feasible suggestions for actual production.
